Installing Of A Cab Corner Patch Panel

The corners of older trucks are prone to severe rust damage due to the accumulation of dirt, bite and path debris. Tap out low spots on the welded seam with a body hammer to even out the body panel.



1. Place a cab corner patch against the Motor lorry cap. Act it into position. Hint all over the elsewhere of the panel with a permanent marker. Remove the patch.


2. Divide along the striking string with a couple of aviation snips. Place the removed metal aside. Straighten the chop edges by tapping along the reduce with a body hammer.


3. Clean paint and remaining rust from the body panel with a 60-grit flapper wheel attached to an angle grinder. Stop grinding when the metal surrounding the cut is clean.


4. Attach the ground cable of a MIG welder to the cab of the truck. Turn on the welder. Set the heat and wire speed--according to the chart located on the inside cover of the welder--to weld 24 gauge carbon steel.


5. Put on a welding hood.


6. Align the patch panel with the opening cut in the cab corner.


7. Place a tack weld on one corner of the patch panel by holding the MIG gun on the seam, pressing the trigger of the gun and releasing the trigger after 2 seconds. Secure the panel by placing tack welds every 1/2 inch along the seam of the patch panel and cab corner.


8. Run a constant weld along the tacked seam. Allow the seam to cool.


9. Grind the weld smooth with a 60-grit flapper wheel and an angle grinder.


10. Repairing bulky or multiple rust holes requires installing a corner patch panel.
