Rebuild A Gm Starter Motor

Usual Motors starter motors are light electric motors with assorted points that may wear and intersect performance or prevent the Engine from operating at all. Listen for bearing noise that may indicate a worn bearing. Try to wiggle the cap around and discover any play at the bearing. Replace the bearing if excessive noise or play are present.4. Install the bearing puller onto the bearing and tighten it until it pulls the bearing free of the end cap.

Instructions

1. Remove the brush holders from the starter housing with a flat screwdriver. Pull the old brushes out of the holders and blow any dust from the holder. Install the new brushes into the holders and push the brush into the holder to compress the brush spring. Use a wire tie to hold the brush in the compressed position until the brushes are reinstalled during assembly.

2. Inspect the commutator strip for breaks in the copper strips or bridging between the strips by carbon particles. Breaks in the copper indicate a bad commutator that must be replaced. Bridging may be corrected by polishing the commutator strip with fine emery paper. Bridging material that doesn't get removed by the paper may be carefully gouged out using the corner of a flat screwdriver.

3. Spin the commutator while holding the end cap. The effectiveness to jog the starter is passed fini spring-loaded carbon brushes and into the commutator strip, where the capability generates a Attractive environment that works with the Attractive area in the housing and converts electrical force into kinetic impulse. The starter must be removed from the engine in method to consequence repairs. Once removed, the starter can be rebuilt.

Place the new bearing into the bearing recess and drive it in with a bearing driver and hammer.

5. Install the bearing puller into the plain bronze bushing in the end of the housing. Pull the bushing out of the housing and drive the new one into place with the hammer.

6. Reassemble the starter except for the brush holders. Spin the starter by hand to ensure that the bearings and bushings are properly installed. The starter should spin freely and easily.

7. Slide the brush holders into their holes in the housing. Once the spring-loaded brushes are safely contained within the housing, remove the wire ties to release the brushes and allow them to contact the commutator strip. Tighten the brush holder caps securely with a screwdriver.
