Driving a Car
Acceleration wastes a piece of pressure. In a conventional vehivle, an engine needs to place elsewhere a substantial burst of faculty to accelerate. Hybrid cars save energy during acceleration, cruising, and braking. They use a small, efficient gas engine which generates power for an electronic motor, which in turn powers the wheels. Extra power gets stored in a battery. When the car needs a boost of energy to accelerate quickly, the electric motor simply draws extra power from the battery. This eliminates the waste of having a large motor running all the time. Hybrid cars also shut off their engines when the battery is full. The gas engine only runs when it needs to generate energy for the electric motor, lights, climate control, or other electric systems.
How Hybrid Cars Save Fuel While Braking
Hybrid cars use regenerative braking. When you take your foot off the gas or hit the brakes, the generator turns on. Some of the momentum of the car is used to run the generator, turning the motion of the car into electrical power and slowing down the hybrid. When you accelerate again, that same electrical energy helps power your car. When they have to stop quickly, hybrids also use conventional brakes, which waste energy. It is simply lost. This is a particular problem in city driving, where a driver may have to brake a few times a block.
