Chicken feed the Rotors on a 2002 Nissan Altima
The 2002 Nissan Altima comes equipped with brake rotors on the front of the machine. These brake rotors are the leading components that the brake pads bag to aim the Altima. The brake pedal pushes the brake fluid down to the brake caliper. The brake caliper then pushes the brake pads toward the front and rear of the brake rotor. Once the brake caliper has fully pushed the brake pads to the brake rotor, the Altima will come to a stop. The brake rotors must be replaced when they become grooved or warped.
Instructions
1. Park the 2002 Nissan Altima and set the parking brake. Make sure that the ground or surface is level.
2. Loosen all of the lug nuts from both wheels with a tire tool or the lug wrench that came with the 2002 Nissan Altima.
3. Jack the front of the Altima up from the cross frame that is under the front of the engine. When the car is up high enough, position the jack stands under the front jacking points on both sides of the Altima. Then, lower the car onto the jack stands.
4. Move to the front driver-side wheel and finish removing the lug nuts with the tire tool. Put the lug nuts in a safe place. Pull the wheel off and set it down flat to prevent the tire from rolling.
5. Look on the side of the brake rotor and locate the brake caliper. The caliper is the component that houses the brake pads. Remove the two 13 mm bolts from the back of the caliper with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and a 13 mm socket.
6. Insert the tip of the small pry bar into the top of the caliper and pry the caliper back and forth until it is loose enough to remove from the rotor.
Remove the C-clamp and put the outer brake pad back into the caliper.8. Remove the caliper bracket off the brake rotor by removing the two 15 mm bolts from the back side of the caliper bracket with the 1/2-inch drive ratchet and a 15 mm socket.7. Pull the caliper off the rotor and hang it to the closest component with the bungee cord. Pull the outer brake pad out and insert the C-clamp. Compress the caliper cylinder until it is completely inside of the caliper housing.
Pull the caliper bracket off the brake rotor with your hand and place it on the ground.
9. Tap the back of the brake rotor with the rubber mallet to loosen the brake rotor up from the brake hub assembly plate. Then, pull the brake rotor off the wheel studs with your hands. Set the old brake rotor to the side and slide the new brake rotor onto the wheel studs. Push the new brake rotor all the way back to the wheel assembly plate.
10. Move to the front passenger side of the Altima and follow the same steps above for replacing the brake rotor. Then, reinstall the brake calipers and the front wheels on both sides of the Altima. Tighten the lug nuts down as tight as you can get them with the tire tool.
11. Jack the Altima back up and remove the jack stands. Lower the Altima to the ground. Crank the car and pump the brake pedal up and down to set the brake pads to the new brake rotors. Turn the engine off.
