Switch The Mirror Within My Vehicle

You can replace your interior rear-view mirror.

Whether you're upgrading to a new rear-view mirror or reattaching one that has fallen off, replacing the mirror inside your car is a straightforward task. By arming yourself with the right tools and following the proper steps, you can replace your rear-view mirror with little effort.

Instructions

1. Purchase a rear-view mirror installation kit from an auto parts store. Make sure this kit's shelf life has not expired and hasn't been exposed to extreme temperatures.

2. Begin installation on a day that is neither too hot nor too cold. A sunny day with temperatures between 50 and 75 degrees is suitable, according to Popular Mechanics. Situate your car so no direct sunlight strikes the area where you're replacing the mirror.

3. Remove the metal button attached to the mirror by gently popping it out with a screwdriver or Allen wrench.

4. Use your marker or razor blade to put a mark on the side that attaches to the mirror, not the side that faces out of the window. This prevents you from accidentally gluing the wrong side to the window.

5. Draw a circle on the outside of the windshield with a washable marker to mark the location of the mirror. The mark is made while residue from the mirror is still obvious and serves as a guide for placing the mirror when you reattach it.

6. Put on rubber gloves to avoid putting finger prints on the window that would prevent the adhesive from bonding effectively. Clean the button and the inside of the window thoroughly, removing all glue and residue from both surfaces. Use adhesive remover or sandpaper to clean the button and rubbing alcohol and a razor blade for the windshield. Wipe the windshield with a paper towel to remove the rubbing alcohol.

7. Open the adhesive and place a dime-sized amount onto the side of the button that you did not mark. Press the button onto the glass within the circle you marked as a reference. Do this carefully and quickly; you only get one chance.

8. Maintain pressure on the button for about a minute.

Avoid tightening it too much.9. Wait several hours before attaching the mirror. When it is dry, place your mirror on the button and turn. It should screw into place.
